Mandatory Units

B1 - Prepare and maintain salon treatment work areas

This unit is about preparing and maintaining the beauty therapy work area. It covers preparing the work area for waxing, eye treatment, make-up, nail and facial treatments.  You will need to be able to set up materials and equipment for these treatments, maintain personal appearance and hygiene and obtain the client records you will also need to dispose of waste after the treatment store client records, clean the work area and leave it a suitable condition.

Outcomes of this unit:

• Prepare the treatment work areas
• Maintain the treatment work areas

G3 - Contribute to the development of effective working relationships

This unit is about forming good relationships with clients in a way that promotes goodwill and trust, being able to work effectively when supporting your colleagues and using opportunities for learning what happens within your job role.

Outcomes of this unit:

• Develop effective working relationships with clients
• Develop effective working relationships with colleagues
• Develop yourself within the job role

G20 - Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety

This unit is for everyone at work (whether paid unpaid full or part-time) it is about being aware of the main risks in your workplace and knowing how to identify and deal with them.

• Your own actions do not create and health and safety hazards
• You do not ignore the hazards that present risks in your work place
• You take sensible action to put things right including reporting situations which pose a danger to people in your work place and seeking advice
• It is very important that you understand the terms "hazard", "risk" and "control"

Hazard "a hazard is something with potential to cause harm"
Risk "is the likelihood of the hazards potential being realised"
Control "the means by which risks identified are eliminated or reduced to acceptable levels"

The course consists of five units in total; the three mandatory above and from the optional units that could be offered the following two.

Optional Units  

B2 - Assist with facial skin care treatments

This unit is about assisting with facial treatments. You will need to be able to prepare for treatments by setting up the work area, using consultation techniques, performing a skin analysis and preparing the client. You will also need to be able to assist with facial treatments, including cleaning, removing eye make-up, toning, mask application and moisturising.

• Maintain safe and effective methods of working when assisting with facial treatments
• Consult, plan and prepare for treatments with clients
• Carry out facial treatments
• Provide aftercare advice

N1 - Assist with nail services

This unit is about assisting with and carrying out basic nail services on the hands and feet.  You will need to be able to prepare for nail services by setting up the work area and using consultation techniques. You will need to be able to carry out basic nail services, including filing, buffing, application of a suitable nail finish and hand and foot lotion. The service will also involve check the finished effect is to the satisfaction of a senior member of staff and the client. Advising the client on after care and leaving the work area in a suitable condition is also required.

• Consult, plan and prepare for nail services with client
• Carry out nail services
• Provide after care services
