Student Programmes

Your son or daughter’s programme will be made up of four elements.  Please note that all these elements are important and that full attendance is required in all cases.

Main course(s)
This will be either a single vocational or general vocational course (NVQ, BTEC First or National), a group of A level or GCSE  courses or a combination of courses.  In either case a range of lecturing staff are likely to be involved.  It will take up the majority of the time on your son or daughter’s timetable and will give them the main qualifications they need to progress on to Higher Education, Further Training or employment.  The decision on the course which best suits your son or daughter will be based on their average GCSE score.

Key Skills
All students will be given the opportunity of studying a key skills qualification during their time at college, assessed through written tests and a portfolio of course-work.

Tutorial
All students will have an hour for their tutorials.  This will include sessions on study skills, careers guidance and regular one to one interviews to review progress.  The College is divided into faculties and every attempt will be made to place your son or daughter with a faculty that encompasses part of their study.
A data use statement will be provided in late September when your son or daughter receives their individual learning agreement.  In particular we would refer you to the fact that at enrolment, students who will be under 18 at the commencement of their course are asked to indicate which parent/guardian regular reports are to be sent. Most students give us permission to contact both parents/guardians, but we cannot insist upon this.

Enrichment
All first year and one year students can opt for an enrichment activity.  Many of these take place on Wednesday afternoon, but there are activities at lunchtime and in the early evenings.  Enrichment gives students a chance to broaden their experience, gain extra qualifications or develop a particular talent.  Attendance at these activities is often valued by universities and employers. Activities include sports, performing arts and community service.

Changes to Programmes of Study
From time to time students need to make changes to their programme.  This will be done through their tutor and Faculty Director, and you will be kept fully informed of any changes made.

Moodle
Moodle is a virtual learning environment in which lecturers can store their session plans and learning materials. All students are provided with a user name and password at the start of their course which means that they can access learning resources at any time and from anywhere. In some cases it will be possible for students to upload their work onto the VLE so that it can be marked and sent back to them. We ask that you encourage your son/daughter to use this VLE, particularly during periods of absence.
