Yeovil College Student Union
Hello from Yeovil College Student Union (YCSU)! A student union is a unique and (in our opinion!) very important aspect of college life that you don’t get at school, so let us tell you a bit about what we do and how we make life at Yeovil College more fun and interesting.
Every student is automatically a member of the Yeovil College Student Union (YCSU) at no cost.

LET'S GET THIS PARTY STARTED!
YCSU has a committee of up to ten students, which usually organises parties and social events for students at the College throughout the year. In 2009/10, we’ve had about six parties at venues around Yeovil, including Club Neo and the Chicago Rock. These are a great opportunity to get to know other students away from College and have some fun. We also organise our own gigs.

OUT AND ABOUT
If you’re more shopaholic than party animal, you could always sign up for one of our Christmas shopping trips! Last December, we put on a free coach from Yeovil College to Cribbs Causeway in Bristol, giving everyone a chance to buy their presents away from prying eyes! YCSU has also put on other day trips for the more adventurous, including one to Thorpe Park in Surrey. We’re already looking out for ideas of where to go next year!

NUS CARD
Talking of shopping, one of the best things about a student union is NUS Extra card. This is a national discount card for students which means you get money off at lots of big name high street shops and online retailers. You will automatically become a member of YCSU if you come to Yeovil College and you can then apply for a discount card. Come and see us at our September Freshers’ Fair when you start your course to find out how!

FUNDRAISING
YCSU is serious about fundraising – but we like to have fun doing it! As well as straight forward collections, we like to run events which students can get involved in. With their support, YCSU has raised thousands of pounds for charities including WaterAid, Help for Heroes, St Margaret’s Hospice and the Piers Simon Appeal. If there’s a charity you’d like to support, come and tell us about it!

SOMETHING TO SHOUT ABOUT?
As well as raising money for important causes, we also campaign on issues such as fair trade, top up fees, public transport, equal opportunities and environmental issues. If there’s a cause close to your heart and you want to do something about it, come and talk to us!
SUPPORTING YOU
We’re really lucky that Yeovil College has a great team of staff dedicated to supporting us as students, but it’s not always easy to know who to go to. Sometimes it can be easier to speak with one of us to begin with, or for minor problems – like finding the loos! Above all, YCSU is there to support you and help you find the right person to talk to when you’re ready. The YCSU Executive has also had special training in safeguarding and sexual health campaigns including C-Card, Chlamydia awareness and condom distribution, meaning that we can give you additional, impartial support in these areas.

GET INVOLVED IN YOUR YCSU
YCSU has a committee of approximately 10 students from across the College. Each person has a specific job title and role, such as the Activities Officer, who organises the trips, the Chairperson, who leads our weekly meetings, and the Student Governor, who represents the student body on the College’s Board of Governors. Visit www.yeovil.ac.uk for a full list and details of how to apply for these roles.
HOW TO CONTACT US
As you can see, we’ve a very active Union and we hope you’ll want to get involved when you join the College. If you would like to know more, email us via student.union@yeovil.ac.uk or give us a call on 01935 845305. Alternatively, come and see us at one of the College’s Full-time Information Evenings! We usually have a stand at these events, so check the events to see when the next one's happening. We look forward to seeing you there!
